Victorian Project

At the time of Queen Victoria, industrial revolution was one of the major issues. On this context, education was not very important and families forced children to work in order to have more money. Only rich and middle class went to school. Girls did not have many possibilities and only boys went to school, the wealthy families pay a governoss to teach the girls at home. Few schools at Victorian time were super strict and usually punished children with lashes, stocks, the log and the cage.
Some of the school for rich people were Grammar Schools and Public School, in both cases families had to pay fees.
Some other schools were "Dame" Schools, run by a woman, that helped poor children for free. The Sunday School ware run by the church, to teach children about the Christian faith. Other was the Ragged school, for poor people, older children helped to teach younger ones.
Some of the lessons at the schools were Reading, Writing and Arithmetics.
During Victorian times, several changes were introduced to education. Some of the most important were:
- In 1833  factory owners were supposed to provide at least two hours of education every day for children working at the factories.
- In 1870 a reform was made in order to have a school in every town.
- In 1880 was mandatory by parliament law school for children between 5 to 10 yaers old.
- In 1891 schools become free.
